Riaccolto

The land of freedom

Casa Sankara - Puglia

Casa Sankara is not the house. It is the bridge between the shacks and the city. Because if we cannot make people free to decide, we have done nothing

Papa Latyr Faye Herve

“Riaccolto. La Terra della libertà” is the peeled tomato produced in the countryside of San Severo (Foggia), totally ethical, that is, free, in every production step, from any form of exploitation of agricultural labor, the result of a project that sees the synergy between African agricultural laborers, agricultural realities of the Capitanata and public institutions to fight against illegality and gangmastering. The lands that are cultivated to produce RIACCOLTO are in fact from the former regional agricultural company located in Fortore, in the countryside of San Severo, abandoned for decades and that in 2012 a small informal group of sub-Saharan African migrants, mostly Senegalese, brought back to life by self-organizing to escape and escape other migrants from the exploitation of gangmasters.

Thus was born “Casa Sankara”, a place of dignity in which to live, an alternative to the ghetto, in which to emerge from invisibility and illegality, in which to plan one’s own working and life future and fight for one’s rights and emancipation. There now stands a guesthouse that hosts more than 400 African migrants, followed and accompanied in a path of work and social integration. Riaccolto has reached the third year of production and has been able to employ a total of more than 90 young people, guests of Casa Sankara, in all phases of the process, from planting the seedlings to harvesting the tomatoes, all regularly employed, all with a paycheck and all paid regularly. http://www.casasankara.it
