BarConi

Regenerative Processes in Ballarò

MoltiVolti - Palermo

This project truly changed my life: from the despair of not finding a job without being exploited, to the hope of becoming an entrepreneur.

BarConi is a recently launched start-up involving three young women, one young man with a migrant background, and a young pastry chef from Palermo. It is primarily an ice cream parlor, but also a café producing desserts, cakes, and fresh juices such as ginger and bissap, with more flavors soon to be introduced, inspired by the cultural diversity of those who manage and work there. The BarConi project is located within a complex and multifaceted territorial context—the Ballarò-Albergheria district in Palermo—where over 25 languages are spoken, and there is a significant presence of foreign communities. Despite years of active social inclusion efforts, the integration level remains low, resulting in a population fragmented by social class and geographical origin.

Within the Ballarò neighborhood, there were no ice cream shops previously, and this gap inspired Moltivolti to open an ice cream parlor and café, celebrating diversity both in ice cream flavors and in the cakes and other products sold. The gelateria is located in Piazzetta Mediterraneo, a place previously neglected but gradually reclaimed by the local community over recent years. Cleaned from trash and debris and revitalized by residents and local businesses, the square has become a charming space to enjoy a beer or a panino con le panelle—and now also artisanal ice cream. https://moltivolti.org
